So it seems we are already in February. You have Valentine’s day front and center for the month. Love is in the air and all that jazz. So if we’re all busy focusing on love, why can’t we extend that to ourselves?.
Self love is something I seem to talk about frequently. I know how hard it can be to try and love yourself. So when I say “self love” does it mean you have to love everything?. No, definitely not. I like to think of myself as a work in progress.
No one is perfect, we all have our faults and things we are/should be working on. That’s okay! We’re human, we’re not meant to be perfect.
So why did I choose February to bring this up? Well it is the month of love (or single awareness). Haha.

Easy February self care/love ideas
Give yourself an at home spa day
So this is a favorite of mine because it’s so easy to tailor it to your own likes and what’s relaxing to you. Case in point: I love a nice warm bath. However my supervisor at work finds taking baths disgusting. To each their own ;-).
So whether you love doing your nails, doing skin treatments (Dermalogica has so really fantastic products, I highly recommend them). Or giving yourself a foot massage, it’s all great.
Read a book you’ve had your eye on
Whether you prefer ebooks, physical books or audiobooks, it’s all counts as reading in my books. So grab a book you’ve had your eye on or reread a favorite (that’s something I’ve done a lot of this year!). If you feel like being “festive” try reading a rom-com as February themed book, or a romance. My favorite is fantasy romance. (I’m obsessed with fae).
If you’re looking for some reading suggestions feel free to check out my book blog or Goodreads. I enjoy reading a variety of books :-).
Go for a walk or run
It’s a great idea to get that blood pumping and oxygen flowing, just be careful that you don’t slip on ice or snow.
Enjoy some time outside
This could be anything from going for a run, building a snow fort, bird watching or if you live in a warmer climate, the beach.
Watch a romantic comedy (or Zombieland because it’s great!)
Yes, I am obsessed with Zombieland. In my books it’s completely fantastic but then again sarcastic humor is my jam. If you’re looking for something more “romantic” I highly recommend “Ever After” with Drew Barrymore ( it’s from the 90s) and amazing!
Volunteer at a local shelter walking dogs or playing with kitties
I guarantee that the animals and shelter workers/volunteers will enjoy this as much as you will.
Write a list of things you love about yourself or that you are grateful for
Self love and gratitude never go out of style, just saying ;-). It really helps put things into perspective if you choose to do a gratitude list (I highly recommend this, everyone should really do one).
Cook your favorite meal
Whether you just really want a toasted avocado sandwich, a big comforting bowl of chili or something more fancy like a 5 course dining experience. Enjoy whatever your stomach desires.
Go for coffee by yourself or with a friend
It doesn’t have to be coffee, personally I prefer herbal tea or hot chocolate.
Work up a sweat
Perhaps for you that means dancing around your house, going for a run or planking. (My abs hurt just thinking about that). My favorite excercise is yoga, it’s easy on the joints and extremely adaptable to any skill level.
Give yourself some “personal” time in February
(I’m talking masturbation here) lol. Which of course is great all year round, not just the month of “love”.
Write a goals you want to achieve in 5 years, 10 years and 20 years list
This can be a really fun activity. Try seriously considering what you want for your life and also how you plan to get there.
Call and talk to a loved one
This could be a parent, child, sibling or a different type of family such as a close friend or neighbor.
Buy yourself something
This doesn’t have to be something big, it could just be a delicious looking cookie from a new local bakery or a on sale ebook.
Take a class you’ve always wanted to try
Have you been eyeing that pole class? (Okay perhaps that was me), a dance class or maybe a creative writing class. Step outside your comfort zone (scary I know) and give it a try. You may find something you really enjoy.
Treat yourself to a solo date night
Whether you choose to go to a movie, take yourself to dinner or maybe you want to go bird watching, just make sure it’s something you enjoy. My go to was always the hair salon. Haha
Go to a movie alone
For some people this is no big deal, for others it’s incredibly scary. I’m almost 32 and have never done this. Just think, you get to pick whichever seat you like, eat whatever snack(s) you want and go to a movie completely of your choosing! I think I just talked myself into trying this ;-).
Listen to your favorite music
I love Spotify. It has loads of different genres and premade playlists. You also have the ability to create your own playlists with all the songs you love. So whether you’re a rap, pop, bluegrass or opera fan, play what makes you happy.
Sing in the shower
I will be the first to admit that I am extremely tone deaf. I can not hold a tune for beans. Yet I still belt out words I know (or think I know) in the shower, around my apartment and yes… I’m also the obnoxious person singing in the grocery store. * Sorry (not sorry)*
Do some stretching
Stretching is a great way to help take care of your body. It helps with blood flow, oxygenation of blood cells plus being stiff is pretty painful so let’s try and avoid that.
Light your favorite candles
Who doesn’t love a relaxing and gorgeous smelling candle? (willow ridge candles has some really nice ones. It’s a small businesss soy online candle shop run by my friend Elissa).
Have a nap
Sometimes you just need a good nap. Am I right? It can help relax and clear your mind as well as reenergize you. Just make sure you don’t sleep too long or it can mess up your sleep during the night.
Put on a outfit that makes you feel incredible and or sexy
You know that outfit I’m talking about. The one that gives you the extra pep in your step and makes you feel incredibly sexy. That outfit! This is not just for February either, you should be doing this all year long!

Cuddles with my guinea pigs is my favourite form of self-care.
I’ve never had a guinea pig but they are SO cute! I previously had 14 rats over the years. I love little critters. What’s your guinea pigs name?
My girls are Casper and Oreo and my boys are Peanut and Butternut.
Awwwwww, adorable!
😊
Loving this post! My self love comes on the 15th Feb : all that half price chocolate, flowers, pretty underwear and pyjamas in the supermarkets gives me a great excuse for some me-love
Lol, you’re not alone in that. Pretty sale underwear is a great idea! I’ll have to keep an eye out. I’ve already seen posts on Twitter from people waiting for the sale candy and chocolate on Feb 15th. Haha
I agree with all of your suggestions, but I think I need an action movie over a romantic comedy. Too soon after a breakup.
You watch whatever calls to you Shana. <3
There is nothing better than a good nap!!!
Sometimes it’s all you need to feel better 🙂
I got a facial this week, and though I don’t think I could go monthly, I deffo plan on including it in self care at least twice a year.
I’ve had 2 facials before and I loved it. So relaxing and it makes your skin feel amazing!
I love this! I’m working on positive self-talk a lot. No matter your relationship status, love starts with how you take care of yourself.
Yes Ashley! 1000 times yes!. I did a blog post on positive self talk a couple months ago. It’s a very useful tool
Lovely ideas here, they’d be lovely to do with your partner on Valentine’s Day as well x
Definitely! I just wanted to list ones you can do solo because it’s all about “couples” right now. Seriously, if I see one more jewelry commercial I’m going to yack.
Aw I love this!! I’m currently in therapy and my counsellor (who is FANTASTIC btw) is constantly telling me I need to be kinder to myself and need more self-care. So I’m so glad i found your blog, what great timing 🙂
Quinn x
Glad to have you here Quinn! My therapist also says I need to be kinder to myself.
This was a good post, and that list is great! Thanks for sharing. You know I’m always team self-love! 😊
Thanks Jenni <3
I’ve been trying to get out hiking with the pups more this month as that’s one of the things that makes me feel most relaxed and at ease. We visited the local National park the first weekend of the month, although we didn’t end up doing anything notable last weekend. We’ve been talking about where we want to go for a Valentine’s Day weekend hike.
Ooo, that sounds really nice. How many dogs do you have?
Naps and singing in the shower always make me happy 🙂 Did these a lot when I was single.
There’s something really great about belting out tunes in the shower 🙂
Definitely plan to indulge in quite a few of these this month! Been feeling a bit run down and a lack of self care isn’t helping! I fancy having a go at writing down some things I like about myself.
I’m glad to hear that. It’s good to take care of yourself 🙂
I love snuggling up with a good book and lighting some candles. I also often take naps when I find myself too exhausted to do anything. Thanks for the good tips!
-Zoie 😊
http://www.zoierichey.com
That’s great Zoie! Yes, resting when needed is #1! 🙂
Some great ideas in this list Tanya. I love me a rom-com! Being single, I’m all for these self-love February posts! Helen
Thanks Helen! How to lose a guy in 10 days always is enjoyable 🙂
Right! I haven’t watched that in a long time now though so good reminder thanks! Netflix have some new ones out I’m going to check out too…
I was suckered into the Netflix Christmas movies. Lol. So cheesy but so addictive. Netflix usually has something randomly amusing
I was still watching netflix Christmas romance movies in January hahaha
Lol, I don’t blame you. They are seriously addictive
i had a lil giggle over 11 🙂
ive spent this month treating myself with some audiobooks! i thought i didnt love them, turns out im wrong
Glad you had a giggle. Although it is a part of healthy living ;-). I’m picky when it comes to audiobooks, it all depends on the narrator for me
im ace so i actually read it and was like ah yes i really should just take a personal day and turn off from social media and just enjoy it and then i read the rest of it and giggled because that hadnt crossed my mind :’)
thats why i didnt like them bc i’d been unlucky in the past! im trying out libro.fm with review copies + then found a few on spotify too (city of ghosts by v e schwab had a good narrator and its only short!)
Haha, no worries! City of ghosts is one I want to read.
What a wonderful list – especially since we are all so different and what to me is “relaxation” might be for another person stressful!
In the end, we have to be realistic about “how do I fill my cup?”
Exactly Beth :-).
I love this! I practice self care by taking luxurious bubble baths, getting my nails done, taking time to myself to read, puzzle, or enjoy other enjoyable activities. Watch a movie of my choosing and eat some chocolate, take a relaxing walk in nature, and meditate or yoga. <3
That all sounds wonderful. I can’t wait to get back into yoga, I really enjoyed it when I was younger 🙂
Love these ideas, I’m away from home at the moment and am enjoying the peace and serenity but do miss my family and friends. I will definitely be undertaking some of your suggestions. I love my acupressure Shakti Mat time and a pot of herbal tea ☕❤️
Ooooo, that sounds lovely! I’ve never had acupressure done. I’ve heard good things though
yes yes yes to naps! I always need one (vitamin deficiency ugh) so me time is nap time haha!
lovely list and great ideas, thanks for sharing x
Thanks for reading Katelyn, I have a vitamin d deficiency and low iron so I’m tired a lot as well
This is a great list! I’m married, but I’ll be saving some of these to do when I need time to myself. 😊
Excellent! <3
I just might follow these tips. Never thought of loving myself on Febuary before
🙂
Great post and you are so right. My self love would be dancing. As I love dancing and it keeps me fit! So taking latinf or hip hop lessons would be ideal
Oooooo, that would be so fun! I have 2 left feet. Lol.
Just spending time with my three dogs Sophie, Zoey, and Peaches makes me feel loved.
Animals really are amazing.
Just spending time with my dogs Sophie, Zoey, and Peaches makes me feel more loved!
Love the self more than anything. Well written…. Kudos
Thank you
I mean, face masks, obviously. But also why not learn how to give yourself a proper pedicure? I personally hate having my feet touched by other people, but I do love the look of a well-done pedi. So I looked up some YouTube tutorials on how to give myself a real pedicure, beyond just painting my toes. Plus it saves me a few $!
I agree, that’s why I put give yourself a at home spa day 😉
These are some fantastic ideas! I’m actually part of a month long self love collab on Instagram. Come check us out at #LoveMyself2020 ❤️
Hey Sam, that’s so neat! I’ll definitely check it out 🙂
Love these ideas, and you got a giggle out of me on the “personal time” one lol. I love skincare as a form of self-love and drawing too, it may sound silly but getting my feelings out on a page is self care to me. 😊
Lol, you’re not the first who had a giggle at that. I completely understand what you mean Zoey. I find writing extremely therapeutic as well xo
Self love is so important. Valentine’s Day is normally seen as negative day for single people, as years go by, it’s also about self love which you have shown here. Great post.💜
Thanks Kyra <3
I’m supposed to be taking self care seriously at the moment. But not doing a very good job of it. So I’m setting myself the task of doing at least 5 from your list by the end of the month. I will report back if I’m successful.
You can do it Adam, even taking 5 minutes to just breath is self care. It doesn’t have to be complicated. I look forward to your report 🙂
I love your post and all of the self care ideas. Believe it or not…going for a walk with my husband is one self care idea that I love.
Thank you sweet friend for sharing! Happy Valentine’s Day!!
Happy valentine’s day love. You really have helped brighten up Twitter. I’m really glad we met :-). When I’m able my husband and I like to sometimes take evening walks, its extremely relaxing and almost has a detox effect.
❤️❤️
Love you Brenda! xoxo
Love this! Check me out at http://www.rachelscottwrites.com
Thanks
More cuddles with my kids and new audio book. Loved your ideas!
Sounds wonderful
Love these ideas. I’ll probably have a home spa day.
It’s always a great time 🙂
I will definitely be having more self-care time this month! I love singing in the shower or singing along to the radio on the way home after I have had a bad day helps clear my head. Also, there is nothing better than talking to your mum or close friend, sometimes we just need to vent!
Exactly! 🙂
All of these ideas were brilliant! And you’re right, since Valentine’s Day is about love, why not show ourselves a bit of love too? I personally love carving out some time for myself to dive into a good book and disappear for a little bit in that world. That’s been my main self-care lately. Plus I’ve been getting rid of things and trying my hands at minimalism, and it’s kind of nice not to be surrounded by random things I don’t necessarily care about. It also cuts back on cleaning aka more time for reading! 😉
Lovely post and such a good reminder of things to do for yourself! Because we deserve self-love!
Emily | http://www.thatweirdgirllife.com
You are so right Emily! I went through all my stuff last may and got rid of a lots stuff. It does make cleaning quicker and easier as well, so more time for reading 😉
Lovely post! I did a similar one a while back with a list of little things to lift your mood and a lot of the things you’ve listed were also on my list! 🙂 definitely need more self love! Hannah (hannahshappyhour.com)
Thanks Hannah 🙂
Such a great idea. I tend to use Valentine’s Day as a time to only treat myself, a ‘treat yo self’ kinda day haha | lanalikes.com
That’s a great idea Lana! The day after Valentine’s day is when I strike. Uh, sale chocolate! Ps your name is one of my favorites. 😉
Hahah I don’t blame you! Well thank you haha
🙂
Watching a rom-com and just binging on snacks is definitely my idea of an awesome self love afternoon!
A couple of my favorites are The Proposal and How to lose a guy in 10 days. What’s your go to romcom?
I love both of these! I just watched The Proposal again lol. Mine would be Serendipity, 27 Dresses, 13 Going On 30 and What’s Your Number!
I also enjoy 13 going on 30. Oh! And Never been kissed.
I think I had watched Never Been Kissed once lol
I love it. Haha
These are some great ideas i’m going to give them a shot!
Yay! 🙂
I love the variation here from reading a book to lighting a candle! I definitely need to make a bit more time for myself sometimes. Great post!
Thanks Lindsey, I try to use variety that way hopefully there’s something for everyone. It probably stems from my people pleasing need, which I am trying to work on
