SMART goals: 5 Reasons you should be Setting them

What the heck are SMART goals, and how do you achieve them? What even makes a goal SMART? Well I’m glad you asked! Get ready to learn how you can set achievable goals right now!

  • S – Specific
  • M – Measurable
  • A – Achievable/Attainable
  • R – Realistic
  • T – Time Bound

Goal setting can be extremely difficult at times. You want to be setting goals you can reach but also not sell yourself short in what your capabilities are. They should be “hard” or “harder”. You as the goal setter need to feel they they are worth the effort.

Pick goals that are important to you. Goal setting is not about setting any old goals. They should be relevant to you and your life, what you what for your future, ect.

S: Specific

Having a “specific” goal means that it should be clear and concrete, not wishy washy and blurred. It’s great to say “I want to be famous” but that’s very open ended. Famous for what? Writing? Philanthropy? Basketball?

It’s also helpful to you if you create clear goals. This way you can map out what steps need to be taken for you to achieve it. It’s also helpful to know the reason behind why you want to conquer these goals.

They should be important to you in some way, serve a purpose in your life and hopefully make your life better.

M: Measurable

I don’t want to say that any of the SMART goals are “most important” because they all hold value, but this is a pretty big one. Specifically so that you can track your goal progress. For example if you have a child in grade 10 who wants to be a doctor. There are specific steps that have to be taken, you can’t just “be” a doctor. Your child would have to finish grades 10, 11 and 12. Then get a bachelor’s degree, making sure that they take all the required medical school courses then apply to medical school.

Or let’s take finances as an example. Let’s say you want to pay off a $5000 loan. Well most of us can’t just pull out $5000 and hand it over. No, you have to make payments. At the same time you also have to budget and make sure you aren’t spending over your means. You’re trying to pay off debt, not rack up more.

A: Achievable/Attainable

Achievable goals do not mean easy. You want to set goals that you actually have to work towards. Not only will you not sell yourself short as to your abilities but you will also achieve a massive feeling of accomplishment, and who doesn’t want that?

For example, avoid setting goals such as “I’m going to live to be 100”. Yes, I purposely picked a ridiculous goal. Setting goals like this example can end up going extremely wrong. There are so many variables to a “goal” such as this one, plus some things in life you have no control over whatsoever.

Instead try setting goals like “I’m going to drink more water every day. Then to help yourself achieve this goal you carry a water bottle around with you so you have easy access to water as you need it throughout the day.

That bottle is my ice tea press. In it is just water, ice and a ice tea bag. No sugar or anything. It is definitely helping to increase my water intake

R: Realistic

It’s great to have goals and dreams but you have to take your own personal abilities into account. No, I’m not trying to rain on your parade. Okay, this is going to be “way out there” but it’s on purpose.

So let’s pretend I, a 5″2, can’t jump for beans or reach the top shelf shorty wants to play professional basketball. This is problematic for a couple of reasons.

  • 1. I’m short and have t-rex arms (seriously, why do they even have shelves that high? *I’m looking at you top shelf*).
  • 2. I have no and I mean no jumping skills.
  • 3. I have very little hand-eye coordination and would be most likely to smack myself in the face with the ball (seriously, I’ve done that before, grade 8 gym class).

So as you can see, being a professional basketball player is definitely not realistic for me. That doesn’t mean that you can’t have aspirations though. If you have always wanted to be a published author then write that goal down with your other SMART goals! Work towards it and make it happen.

P.s I despise basketball. Seriously…. please don’t make me play.

Another easy example for a attainable goal is to eat more fruits and veggies each day. Set a timeframe, such as “I’m going to eat 5 extra servings of fruits and veggies every day for 3 weeks”. Mark it down so you see it every day.

Give yourself a hand by prepping fruits and veggies and putting them in containers in the fridge for a easy grab and go snack.

These containers contain strawberries, blueberries and grapes. Even my husband will grab a container sometimes

T: Time Bound

This simply means no “open ended” goals. Create a timeline, include milestones you want to reach at certain points. For example, if you want to become more active don’t just say “I want to be more active”. A goal like that can seriously mean anything.

Instead try creating goals like “I will walk every day for 30 minutes. It’s a small goal but no one says you can’t increase it as your abilities change.

To create a time bound goal try “I will walk 30 minutes every day for 3 weeks in a row”. Then mark that timeframe on your calendar or calendar app.

Well I’m glad you asked! These tend to be easier to remember for one thing, plus it provides pretty clear “directions”. SMART goals don’t have to be complicated. Make sure they have meaning to you and your life/career goals.

Keep track of your goals and your progress, this way you can adjust them if you need to or just bask in how awesome you are!

  1. I LOVE the idea of the boxed fruits and veggies. I am so bad at that. Working from two things I forget to do is drink water and eat more veggies, si I am adopting this idea. And yes SMART goals are a great way to stay motivated.

  2. Love it! Actioning and acronym-ing goals is great way to remind yourself of why to are doing what you are doing and why you have set such goals. Tonight I watched Ballerina with my nieces – as a performer it broke me, the stage, the lights, the hard work the lead character puts in to becoming a ballerina hit me hard. There was one question that kept being asked – “why do you want to dance?” and she was very vague at the start – she just wanted to. But when she auditioned for the Nutcracker she had to really understand why she wanted to be a Ballerina. What was it that made her want it so bad, she needed to be specific and connected to the goal. It made me think about why I wanted to become an actor – and the answer is always the same.
